LOL, Speaking of feeders. I'm trying to talk Rob into letting me start a couple of rat tubs here in the apartment. He says they'll smell too bad, I don't know why though, I clean enclosures EVERY DAY.

They do stink and cleaning every day would get pricey. (We do need a spell check)

Definitely don't want to be the smelly guy, that's why my cages are so clean. I was just wondering since I used to have a pet rat. I figured I could get enough output for me with just two breeding pairs but I could be completely wrong, I've never bred feeders before.

dont know how many animals you have, but if your lucky each female will produce a litter a month of 8 to 12 babies. Thats about what mine do. They also tend to have them at the same time, thats bad if you want them to last the month, also what sizes do you need it takes a while for them to grow. Also you said two pairs the extra male is not nessasary, actually you could put three females with the one male. Give it a shot see how it goes, I do it, I have about 10 females and I still have to buy every now and then. Usually i'll stop by the store get some rat pups and come home to a litter. I aslso have 40 snakes/Lizards to feed so 10 females is really not enough for me. But I guess if your gonna breed snakes you gatta breed mice and rats, unless you have a lot of money. The problem Mr. admin and I have is finding good, cheap food for our rodents. It doesnt save any money to pay 10 dollars for 5 pounds of food for rodents. i've used rodent block and something the feed store called pig grower. I actually produced more and more consistantly with the pig grower than the rodent block ( this is the block they get at the shop). Ive also used the Mazzuri brand rodent block with good results i think it was around 25$ at the feed store in bayard for a 50 pound bag, that lasts a while.

Man I can't believe I missed that post. Right now I have 5 animals that eat rats, with a 6th on the way. The Monitor eats a rat pup/fuzz every other day, the Borneo and the Ball are on weans, the King is on smalls and the Boa is up to a small medium all once a week. The Beardie likes to have a pup once every couple of weeks when she's eating regularly. The Retic is going to need a bunch of different sizes in the first year alone. I'm dropping about $60 a month on rodents and crickets when everyone is eating so I'm trying to cut my food bill down just a little. Like I said I don't know how well it would work out in an apartment. I wonder how badly a 1.3 tub would smell. The surplus would go into the freezer for future use, as soon as I had various appropriate sizes they'd be killed and frozen.

I would try the 1.3 tub and see if rob throughs it out on the lawn. If I buy everyweek for my stuff Im looking at around 50 to 60 a week.

buy sale items fill the box, its not that bad. say you order 500 rats at .85 each plus th 45 dollars to ship. thats 470$ less than 1$ each, that at least a 50% savings if not more over the retail pet shops. Its a huge cost up front but the savings a tremendous, my order was only 200 shipped. Monitors and tegus dont care if it is 6 weanling mice, 3 adults or a small rat, its all the same to them, I buy whats on sale and thats what they get, At .06 to .08 each for pinkie and fuzzy mice you cant beat that any where. If I were to buy the same at the shop it would have cost me 1400$ I always hear people complain about the shipping on froze rodents, but never about 50$ to ship a snake. Not sure about that one.

you know I can come In and spend 50$ and not get everyone fed.
14 big rat pups, or weanlings
7 small rats
3 medium rats
4 large rats
12 mouse fuzzies/pinks

So I could spend 200$ easy in a month alone, I know Im a little different than most, but for me it makes sense, I realy dont know how you get all of yours fed.

We should get in on a group buy sometime on Rodent Pro. I have to see what's going to be left out of the tax money. Rob is buying a car for $1500 and I have no idea how much is going to be left for the things I need like my 8' cage and whatnot.

Rodent pro seems to be cheaper on rats and they have chicks, quail, rabbits, little fake pigs, (cant spell it) a little higher on shipping but not much the lower food cost offsets it, I havent bought from them, only mice direct.
